ஒருமுறை ஒரு பெண் சந்தையில் இருந்து ஒரு புதிய விளக்கு ஒன்றை வாங்கினாள். அவள் வீட்டிற்கு வந்தபோது, அறை இருளாக இருந்தது. அதனால் அவள் விளக்கில் எண்ணெயை நிரப்பி ஒளிரச் செய்தாள். அது தெளிவாக நிதானமாக ஒளிரத் தொடங்கியது.
விளக்கு அதனுடைய ஒளியைப் நினைத்து பெருமையாக உணர்ந்தது. அதனுடைய ஒளி சூரியனை விட பிரகாசமாக இருப்பதாக தற்பெருமை கொண்டது.
திடீரென ஒரு கடுமையான காற்று வீசியது. விளக்கு மிகவும் சிறியதாக ஒளிர்வதை உணர்ந்து, அதன் முட்டாள்தனத்தை புரிந்துக் கொண்டது. காற்றை எதிர்கொள்ள முடியாதென்று அதற்கு தெரியவில்லை. பெண் அந்த விளக்கை மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை ஒளிரச் செய்தாள். இப்போது விளக்கு கர்வத்தை காட்டாமலும், செருக்குடன் இல்லாமலும் அமைதியாக ஒளிர்ந்தது.
அந்த பெண் விளக்கிடம், இப்போது அமைதியாக பிரகாசி என்று கூறினாள். உன்னை சூரியனிடம் ஒப்பிட்டுக் கொள்ளாதே. உன்னைப்போல் மீண்டும் ஒளிர வைக்க சூரியனுக்கு யாரும் தேவையில்லை.

Once a lady bought a new lamp from the market. When she reached home, it was dark. So, she filled the lamp with oil and lighted it. It began to shine with a clear steady light.
The lamp felt proud of itself and its light. It started boasting that its light was brighter than that of the sun even.
Suddenly a strong puff of wind came. The lamp felt very small shone and realized its folly. It never knew that it could not face the wind. The lady lighted the lamp once again. Now the lamp kept shining calmly showing no pride and making no boasts.
The lady said to the lamp, Keep shining calmly now. Don′t compare yourself to the sun. Sun never needs anybody to be re-light like you.
