முத்தமிழ் நாட்டில் முத்தமிழ் அரசன் என்ற அரசன் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார், அவருக்கு புதியதாக தென்னை தோட்டம் அமைக்க ஆசையாக இருந்தது. அரண்மனைக்கு அருகில் உள்ள நிலத்தை பயன்படுத்தி புதிதாக தென்னை மரங்களை நாட்டார்.
தென்னை மரங்களை பாதுகாக்க அரண்மனை சேவகனான சிவம் என்ற காவலனை பணியில் அமர்த்தினார். சிவன் நல்ல காவல் காரனாக இருந்தாலும் அவன் ஒரு முட்டாள். இரவு பகலாக காவல் காத்த சிவன், ஒருநாள் மிக சோர்வடைந்தான்.
தென்னை மரங்களை பார்த்து கொள்வது தானே என்வேலை என்று யோசித்த சிவன், அனைத்து மரங்களையும் பிடுங்கி எடுத்து தனது வீட்டிற்கு எடுத்து சென்று பாதுகாத்தான்.
தென்னை மரங்களை பார்வையிட வந்த அரசர் நடந்த நிகழ்ச்சிகளை கேள்விப்பட்டு சிரித்தார். யாருக்கு என்ன வேலை கொடுத்தால் நல்லபடியாக முடிப்பார்கள் என்று அறியாமல், உன்னிடம் வேலை கொடுத்தது என்னுடைய தவறு. நல்ல காவல்காரனை தேர்ந்தெடுக்கும் பொறுப்பு என்னுடையது என்றார் அரசர்.
நீதி : அவரால் அந்த வேலை முடிக்கப்படுமா என்பதை ஆராய்ந்த பிறகே ஒருவரிடம் அந்த வேலையை ஒப்படைக்கப்பட வேண்டும்.
The country was inhabited by a king named Muthamil Arasan, who wanted to set up a new coconut plantation. He cultivated the land near the palace and planted new coconut trees.
He hired a guard named Sivan, a palace servant who guarded the coconut trees. Although Shivan is a good guardian he is an idiot. Shivan, who was on guard day and night, was very tired one day.
Thinking that it was my job to take care of the coconut trees, so Shivan uprooted all the trees and took them to his house to protect them.
The king who came to visit the coconut trees heard the events and laughed. It was my fault for giving you the job, not knowing who would get the job done so well. The king said it was my responsibility to choose a good guard.
Moral : The work should be handed over to one after examining whether the work will be completed by him.
