அரிஸ்டாட்டில் ஒருசமயம் தனது மாணவர்களுடன் சென்று கொண்டிருந்தார். வழியில் ஆற்றை கடக்க வேண்டிய சூழல் ஏற்பட்டது. ஆற்றை நீந்தி கடக்க அரிஸ்டாட்டில் ஆயத்தமானார். அப்போது அவரது மாணவர்களில் ஒருவர், " குருவே, சற்று பொறுங்கள். நான் ஆற்றில் நீந்தி சென்று சுழல்கள் ஏதேனும் உள்ளதா என பார்த்து வருகிறேன்." என்று கூறிவிட்டு ஆற்றில் நீந்தி சென்று வந்தார்.
வந்தபின், "குருவே, தற்போது நாம் செல்லலாம். சுழல்கள் ஏதுமில்லை." என்றார்.
அரிஸ்டாட்டில், "நான் ஆற்றில் நீந்தும்போது சுழலில் சென்றுவிட்டால் என்னவாகிவிடும். இதற்காக நீ ஏன் இவ்வளவு சிரமப்பட்டாய்." என்றார்.
அதற்கு அந்த மாணவன், "குருவே, இந்த அலெக்ஸாண்டர் சுழலில் சென்றுவிட்டால்.. என்னைப் போல ஆயிரம் அலெக்ஸாண்டரை உங்களால் உருவாக்க முடியும். ஆனால் நீங்கள் சுழலில் சென்றுவிட்டால், உங்களைப் போன்ற குரு எங்களுக்குக் கிடைக்கமாட்டார். ஆயிரம் பேரை உருவாக்கக் கூடிய ஆற்றல்மிக்க குருவை இழந்துவிடுவோம்." என்றார்.

Aristotle once went with his students. On the way there was the situation of having to cross the river. Aristotle prepared to swim across the river.
